There are so many wonderful hymns that mark the Christmas Season. The songs of Christmas play a major role in making this time of the year so special. They are deep in theological truth and rich in doctrine. They magnify Christ and reveal to us the wonderful truth of “Jesus, our Immanuel!”
The title of one such song is on my mind today. It is the song, “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” The song was written over 200 years ago and it admonishes all those who love the Lord to come and adore Him. The call of the song goes out to all of the “faithful.”
O come, all ye faithful,
joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him,
Born the King of angels;
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
To be faithful is a rare attribute in the generation in which we live. People struggle with faithfulness in many areas across the spectrum of life. It is far more common to change, switch, or abandon than it is to be faithful.
As we consider the Christmas Season and we consider the great gift of Christ that has been given to us, I am praying that the joy of this truth will lead us to be faithful to Him. Christ was faithful to come to earth. Christ was faithful to be born in Bethlem. Christ was faithful to live among sinners, yet never sin. Christ spoke faithful words and performed faithful miracles. He was faithful to bear our sin and to become sin for us. Christ was faithful to the cross and died in willing love in our place. Christ rose from the dead faithfully. He ascended to heaven and is even now our faithful Advocate. He will faithfully return for us in the rapture at any moment!
May God help us to be faithful to our Lord. We ought to adore Him. Our life ought to please Him. Our ambition should be to bring Him glory in everything and in every way that we can. This Christmas, let’s resolve to give the gift of faithfulness back to Jesus!
